At the Chicago Auto Show on February 10th 1989, the world was introduced to the first, true lightweight sportscar, the Mazda Miata (MX-5).

A truly significant occasion in Mazda history, the launch of this superb two-seater roadster changed the automotive landscape forever.

Its unique design and superb performance captured people's hearts and transcended countries and generations, becoming over the next 25 years, the world's favourite roadster.

The Mazda MX-5 has won more than 200 awards in more than 20 countries.

When it debuted in 1989, Mazda MX-5 faced stiff competition – but it got all the attention, and the column inches.

Impressively, American magazine, Car & Driver placed Mazda MX-5 into its list of '10 best' a total of 14 times over the last 25 years.

In 2000, Mazda MX-5 was certified as the world's 'best selling two-seater sportscar' by Guinness World Records.

This honourable status was awarded to Mazda MX-5 when production reached only 531,890 units.

Since then, its incredible popularity has surpassed 940,000 units with sales expected to eclipse 1 million by 2015.
